SkyCentrics Shipping World’s First UL 916 Conforming Wi-Fi USNAP AC Module working on the ANSI/CEA-2045 Standard

The USNAP Alliance is pleased to announce that SkyCentrics is shipping the first commercially available UL 916 conforming communications module based on the ANSI/CTA-2045 standard (formerly CEA-2045). This ANSI standard was developed specifically to provide a modular approach to enable communications with residential and light commercial products, such as thermostats, water heaters, air conditioners, electric vehicle chargers, appliances and renewable generation such as rooftop solar.

 

Manufacturers, utilities, and customers across the nation have been waiting for a UL 916 conforming AC module to enable energy management communications in homes and commercial buildings. The UL 916 conformance allows utilities and customers to install modules in homes and commercial buildings with confidence. Since SkyCentrics uses SSL between their modules and their cloud servers, they can be assured of the best in Internet security as well.

 

The ANSI/CTA-2045 port allows manufacturers to add flexible, platform independent, communication directly to the equipment’s own controls, providing more flexibility in the type of response, and less wear and tear on the equipment. ANSI/CTA-2045 allows manufacturers to offer new and exciting features, plus energy savings, to their customers, and furthers the opportunities for electric utilities to enable the near real-time dynamic grid balancing necessary to advance their environmental and economic goals and improve grid reliability.

SkyCentrics Joins USNAP Alliance

SkyCentrics sees growing industry interest and support for ANSI/CTA-2045 Standard

The USNAP Alliance is pleased to announce that SkyCentrics is joining the Alliance to promote their new communications modules based on the ANSI/CTA-2045 standard (formerly CEA-2045). This ANSI standard was developed specifically to provide a modular approach to enable communications with residential and light commercial products, such as thermostats, water heaters, air conditioners, electric vehicle chargers, appliances and renewable generation such as rooftop solar.

Manufacturers are faced with a number of industry communication standards that vary from industry to industry and from one type of equipment to another. For example, traditional energy management systems use different communication technologies than renewable resources, making connectivity limited to a very expensive gateway.  The ANSI/CTA-2045 port allows vendors to add communication directly to the equipment’s own controls, providing vendors with more flexibility in the type of response, and less wear and tear on the equipment. The application of ANSI/CTA-2045 in the manufacturing of end use equipment allows manufacturers to offer new and exciting features, plus energy savings, to their customers, and furthers the opportunities for electric utilities to enable the near real-time dynamic grid balancing necessary to advance their environmental and economic goals.

BPA tracks ANSI/CEA-2045 standard driven by environmental and economic goals

 

Morgan Hill, Calif., July 31, 2014 The USNAP Alliance today announced the addition of the the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) to the growing list of organizations supporting the simple, cost effective ANSI/CEA-2045 modular communication interface standard. This standard enables home area networks (HAN) or demand response (DR) standards to communicate with utility systems, energy gateways or other devices within the home.

 

The ANSI/CEA-2045 standard provides a modular approach to enable demand response communications with residential and small commercial end-use devices, including space conditioning thermostats, water heaters, air conditioners, electric vehicle chargers, and is being adopted for communication with renewable generation, such as rooftop solar. The USNAP Alliance is furthering the development of the ANSI/CEA-2045 standard and is implementing a testing and compliance program for products utilizing the standard.

 

The CEA-2045 port communicates directly with the equipment’s own controls, so it provides more flexibility in the type of response and offers less wear and tear on the equipment than the traditional method of simply turning off voltage to the device for load control.

 

To accelerate the creation of the Smart Grid within the home, manufacturers need a set communications port standard to produce intelligent and energy aware consumer products that are able to interact with each other as well as the grid,” said Chris Kotting, executive director of the USNAP Alliance. “BPA’s support for ANSI/CEA-2045 further validates the need for this interoperable, secure and cost-effective solution to extend the Smart Grid to energy-aware consumer products.
